Stronger Together: Continuing St.Ursula’s Lifelong Sisterhood

by Gabriella Carissa, Petra Alandra, & Teresa Rafaela

Three alumni of St.Ursula High School since 2015, show the strong sisterhood that comes after graduating to inspire the soon-to-graduate students.

Vanesa Handawi, Clarisa Sudjiatmadja, and Gabriella Gwenny, all esteemed alumni of St. Ursula High School, recently took part in interviews where they shared insightful perspectives about the lasting sisterhood that thrives among those who have walked the halls of their alma mater. When the trio was queried about their connections with fellow St. Ursula alumni, it became apparent that their bonds remain strong and vibrant, with many of them actively staying in touch.Clarisa Sudjiatmadja, in particular, illuminated the contemporary nature of their interconnections. She revealed, "We all remain connected and stay updated about each other's lives through social media." In a world where the digital realm seemingly dissolves geographical boundaries, these graduates have harnessed technology to bridge the gaps that could have separated them.Gabriella Gwenny, when prompted about the evolution of her sisterhood with fellow alumni after graduation, painted a picture of growth and transformation. "I can say it evolves beautifully! As
part of adulting, some people stay, some leave, and some even come closer," Gabriella noted. Her observation encapsulates the dynamic nature of post-graduation relationships. As life takes its course, connections are reshaped, strengthened, or in some instances, naturally redefined. Indeed, the camaraderie among alumni is a complex blend of shared memories, common experiences, and the resilience to adapt to life's changes. Vanesa Handawi talked about the unique element that has served as a foundation for these enduring relationships. "I might say our shared unique experience being in an all-girls school contributed heavily to the strong bonds among alumni," Vanesa remarked. This distinctive setting fostered a sense of unity that has proven integral to their continued closeness.
Beyond the emotional aspects, the network formed through the sisterhood that was built during high school has also proven to be professionally beneficial. Networking and career opportunities have sprung forth from these friendships, prompting questions about the broader influence of the St. Ursula High School network. Clarisa Sudjiatmadja acknowledged, "Certainly, it continues to evolve. Whether through an increasing number of mutual friends or in the realm of work/education. Some, for instance, can collaborate in building communities or working together, while others pursue various paths. Or if we need information or assistance with something, we also don't hesitate to seek relevant connections among alumni who might be working or studying in that field." Clarisa's response underscores the multifaceted nature of these connections, which extend beyond personal relationships to encompass avenues of growth, guidance, and support. The activity that they often engage in as alumni of the same batch is none other than school visits. They gather to reminisce about the times when they were still studying in Sanur. They also come together to meet with the teachers who taught them in the past and inquire about the current school environment. Another significant activity is when they collectively participate in events held by Saint Ursula such as the SERVIAM Vaccination, where Sanur opens vaccination for the community openly. “I’m very glad to be a part of the SERVIAM Vaccination not long ago. Not only to help people get vaccinated but to also gather together with my high school friends that I view as my sisters,” said Vanesa. These Alumnus also maintain their connections throughout other generations, Through having connections with the underclassmen, giving them advice if they need any assistance. Vanessa Handawi said “Through my sisters, I have helped lots of my underclassmen about finding the right university by telling them about my own experience and giving them tips on achieving those dream universities. I did not only help others but I also obtained help from my seniors such as advice for studying and obtaining post-graduate jobs.”Some advice was also given to St.Ursula students to help them maintain the sisterhood over the years. They noted, “Be yourselves, show as many of your qualities as possible throughout your friendships, and share your thoughts and opinions openly, in other words, just express yourselves. You will need Sanur sisterhood in any other phases of your life, personally or professionally. To achieve and maintain the sisterhood we have to be open and put effort into the relationship, make good memories, respect each other, and connect!”The efforts that were made to maintain the sisterhood from many different generations and onto the upcoming ones helped a lot of our alumni and many St.Ursula students to not just grow as individuals but also grow as a community. Through this, soon-to-graduate St.Ursula students will have the same impact on one another and will expand St.Ursula’s sisterhood between alumni.
